U of T Biology Competition

The University of Toronto Biology competition will take place on Thursday April 30th during period 4 and 5. The cost is $7 and can be paid on cashless. Or bring $7 cash to the science office.

The Top 5% of students in Canadian schools will receive certificates designating them as National Biology Scholars; the Top 1% as National Biology Scholars with Distinction. Cash prizes will be awarded to the Top 1%. The Top 5% of students in schools outside of Canada will receive certificates designating them as International Biology Scholars; the Top 1% as International Biology Scholars with Distinction. Cash prizes will be awarded to the Top 1%. Admission scholarships will be awarded to the top 15 students (of all participants) in the 2015 competition to register in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto (St. George), valued at $3,000.

National Engineering Month Volunteers Needed

We are asking for your assistance in finding some keen high school students to volunteer for our highlight event of the year - National Engineering Month - a day long event.

8:15am - 3:00pm for volunteers
Holy Trinity Catholic High School, Oakville

Tasks for the day include:
- greeting and directing participants
- set-up and take-down of materials
- oversees food at lunch time (they get some too)
- helping younger students with design activities

All volunteers receive a pizza lunch and snacks throughout the day. They will also receive a letter of acknowledgement for their hours that can be out towards their high school requirement. If they are on a FIRST team, they are asked to wear their FIRST shirts - otherwise they will be provided with a shirt on the day.

Girls in Science Day @ McMaster University

A full day of fun activities and lectures geared towards increasing interest in STEM for girls in Grade 10. More details to follow but the tentative date for this years event is Friday, April 10th

Physics @ Mac Video Contest

Open to all high school students. Students in teams of up to four produce a short youtube video communicating a given physics concept in a creative way. This year's topic is "Physics of Superheros". Students can pick any superhero or superpower and describe the physics involved. Is it even possible? For example, can Spiderman's spider silk actually stop a speeding train? This topic is very open ended and we hope students have fun with it! The submission deadline is Friday, May 15, 2015 at 4:00pm. For more info see here

Chemical and Physical Sciences Research Prize

If you have applied to the Chemical and Physical Sciences I program at McMaster, you might consider applying for this scholarship:

What is it:
The prize is a paid research position in the Department of Physics & Astronomy working under the supervision of a faculty member. In the summer (2016) after their first year of university, the prizewinner will work full time for 16 weeks in a research laboratory or theoretical group. The nominal value of the prize is $6200 plus an early start on their research career!

Applications are due January 31st. Students interested in applying are asked to submit an essay describing a project related to physics, astronomy or biophysics that they have been involved in, and how it has shaped their interest in physics and astronomy. Possible examples are a science fair project, culminating task, lab experiment, volunteer position, special interest, lecture or event, club or competition, co-op placement. The essay must be 500 words or less. Applicants will be judged on their written responses and entrance average. Grades submitted with their program application will be used.

High school students will experience lectures, seminars, workshops, labs and social time with faculty and students of the University of Waterloo.

We live in the midst of change: technological change, social change, political change, environmental change. In modern times humankind has experienced an unprecedented rapidity of change. How do we adapt, or not adapt... and what are the consequences? Students will consider the perspectives of scientists, engineers, writers, and philosophers, as they examine the dynamics of "Change".

Program fee: $450
Supervised overnight shared residence accommodation: $160
All supervision provided by the University of Waterloo.
